Jilin Province is an important potato-producing region in Northeast China, where the crop benefits from a cool temperate climate, relatively long summer daylight and substantial differences between daytime and nighttime temperatures. Potato cultivation is concentrated mainly in the province’s agricultural areas, with conditions particularly favorable in parts of western, central and northern Jilin. The province has extensive agricultural land and fertile soils, including black soils in the central region, while annual precipitation generally ranges from about 300 to 900 mm across the province. These conditions support potato production alongside Jilin’s major grain crops.
Potatoes in Jilin are generally grown as a spring crop, with planting commonly taking place from April to May after temperatures become suitable for emergence and early growth. Harvesting generally occurs from August to October. The relatively cool growing season is well suited to tuber development, although temperature, soil moisture and frost risk influence planting dates and production performance. Research examining Jilin’s potato growing environment has identified substantial areas as suitable or highly suitable for production, particularly across the agricultural zones of the province.
Jilin also has an active potato breeding and varietal development sector. Cultivars grown in the province include both fresh market and processing types, with mid to late maturing cultivars such as Yanshu No. 4, Atlantic, Jishu No. 1 and Summer historically accounting for a large share of cultivation, while early cultivars such as Favorita, Youjin and Fujin are also used. More recently, Jilin research institutions have continued developing locally adapted varieties. For example, Yanshu 16, developed through sexual hybridization and systematic selection, is a medium maturing fresh market cultivar specifically recommended for spring planting in areas including Yanbian, Siping, Songyuan and Changchun.
Potato cultivation in Jilin forms part of the longer development of potato production in Northeast China. By the late 20th century, Jilin had already become a significant potato producing province. Historical agricultural statistics show that Jilin produced about 220,000 tonnes from 91,000 hectares in 1979, while production was approximately 245,000 tonnes from 90,000 hectares in 1981. By 1982, production remained around 215,000 tonnes. These figures demonstrate that potatoes had already established a substantial production base in Jilin during the early period of modern agricultural development.
The industry expanded further as improved varieties, cultivation practices and agricultural research developed. FAO data for 2006 recorded approximately 141,900 hectares of potato cultivation and 1.85 million tonnes of production in Jilin, placing the province among China's established potato producing areas at that time. Potato research subsequently increasingly focused on matching cultivars with Jilin's climate and regional growing conditions. Recent breeding work by institutions such as the Jilin Academy of Vegetable and Flower Science Research and the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture Academy of Agricultural Sciences illustrates the continuing development of locally adapted cultivars. Climate suitability research has also shown changes in the geographic distribution of areas suitable for potato production in Jilin, providing a basis for adapting production and breeding strategies to changing climatic conditions.
