Asia

Asia has become the most important potato-producing and consuming region in the world, with the crop playing very different roles across its vast agricultural landscapes. China and India dominate regional production, while significant potato industries are also found in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, Nepal, Japan, South Korea, Kazakhstan and other countries. Potatoes are grown from the cool highlands of the Himalayas and Central Asia to subtropical plains and winter-growing areas of South and East Asia. This wide adaptability allows the crop to fit into diverse farming systems, including rotations with rice and other cereals.

China and India are particularly important to Asia's potato economy. China has extensive production across northern, southwestern and central regions, including single-, double- and mixed-cropping systems, while India has developed a large winter potato industry concentrated especially in the Indo-Gangetic Plains. Bangladesh and Pakistan have likewise expanded potato production, with potatoes becoming an important winter crop and source of farm income. Beyond fresh consumption, growing urban populations and changing diets are increasing demand for French fries, chips, frozen products, starch and other processed potato products.

The importance of potatoes in Asia extends beyond production statistics. In highland areas of China, India, Nepal, Bhutan and other parts of the region, potatoes can serve as a staple food, while in densely populated lowland areas they are often an important vegetable and cash crop. The crop's relatively short growing period and ability to produce substantial food from limited land make it attractive where agricultural land is under pressure. At the same time, Asian potato production faces challenges including late blight, bacterial wilt, viruses, water stress, changing temperatures, seed-quality problems, storage losses and uneven access to modern technologies. Improving certified seed systems, irrigation, storage, processing and market access will be important for the region's future potato sector.

The potato originated in the Andes of South America and reached Asia several centuries after its domestication. European maritime trade played an important role in its early movement. FAO historical material indicates that potatoes were introduced into India by Portuguese traders during the sixteenth or early seventeenth century, although the exact route and dates remain uncertain. Historical evidence cited by the International Potato Center records a reference to potatoes at a banquet in Ajmer in 1615 and suggests that the crop may have entered India through Surat before spreading to other parts of the country. From India, potatoes subsequently moved into areas including Nepal, Bhutan and Sikkim.

The potato also reached China and other parts of East Asia through European and regional trade networks. FAO sources indicate that the crop was probably introduced to coastal China during the seventeenth century and subsequently spread inland, while the potato reached the Korean Peninsula from China probably during the early nineteenth century. Over time, the crop changed from a relatively unfamiliar introduction into an important food-security and commercial crop. Production expanded particularly rapidly during the twentieth century, with China and India becoming major global producers. Today, Asia represents one of the central pillars of the global potato industry, combining large-scale production with diverse traditional food uses and rapidly developing markets for processed potato products.
