News on Potato Prices from Pakistan

Pakistan can double potato export earnings by focusing on industrial varieties and processing. Rising production, global demand, and quality seeds boost growth, while value addition opens high-value markets and stabilizes farmer incomes.

Pakistan is to allow duty-free import of another 100.000 tonnes of potatoes - in addition to the earlier approved 200.000 tonnes.

Despite the assurances by the government, the price of potatoes in Pakistan has increased.

The imposition of 25 per cent regulatory duty on potato exports from Pakistan and making its import at zero per cent have yet to make the vegetable cheaper in domestic markets.

With potato prices ruling at Rs 20 a kg in retail in the domestic market, traders from Jammu and Kashmir have started importing potato from the two Line of Control (LOC) trade posts of Srinagar and Poonch.
