On April 9, 2025, Deutscher Kartoffelhandelsverband e.V., DKHV (the German Potato Trade Association) held its 19th General Assembly in Dresden, a city with a long-standing tradition in trade and historical ties to the potato industry.

In his opening speech, DKHV President Thomas Herkenrath highlighted the parallels between the post-reunification period in the early 1990s and the current economic and geopolitical challenges.

Thomas Herkenrath:

"Then, as now, we face great uncertainties, but it is courage, drive, and entrepreneurial spirit that make us strong as an industry."

Looking Back at the Past Year: Political Work During the 2024/25 Election Year

The past year was marked by intensive political work for the DKHV. The EU election, several state elections, and the early federal election reshaped the political landscape – with direct impacts on the industry.

The association actively advocated for its members’ interests, positioned itself with clear messages, and engaged in dialogue with political decision-makers.

Thomas Herkenrath:

"We are particularly eager to see who will take over the key ministries for agriculture, economy, and justice, as they will significantly influence our regulatory framework."

EU Policy and Its Impact on the Potato Trade

There are promising signs that European policy is moving toward economic stability and competitiveness, as reflected in legislative initiatives such as the Omnibus Regulation. Through the European umbrella organization Europatat, the DKHV advocates for deregulation and the strengthening of free trade.

Thomas Herkenrath:

"Our long-standing efforts are bearing fruit – now German policymakers must follow suit and create business-friendly conditions."

RUCIP Modernization: Uniform Standards for European Potato Trade

Amid current economic challenges, the RUCIP trading rules are being modernized to make cross-border potato trade more efficient. The DKHV is actively involved in this process and advocates for practical, competitive conditions.

Research for Practical Potato Applications: VSD Provides Insight

A key topic of the assembly was research in the potato sector. Andreas Meyer, head of the Dethlingen Experimental Station (VSD), reported on ongoing research projects and current findings from the practice-oriented research institute. The DKHV supports the VSD, which focuses on storage, processing, and process technology.

Thanks to the Organizers and Outlook

At the conclusion of the assembly, Herkenrath thanked all participants.

Thomas Herkenrath:

"This meeting has once again demonstrated that through exchange, cooperation, and commitment, we as an industry can overcome the challenges of our time."
