Machinery ends Jersey Royal potato tradition

Jersey Royal seed potatoes have been planted by a machine, instead of traditionally being planted by hand.

Discovered in 1880, the potatoes are Jersey's biggest export and farmers sell about £35m worth every year.

A £25,000 potato planter is being used by one farm to aid numbers of the crop, normally placed in the ground.

Nick Mourant, from Meleches Farm in St Helier, told BBC Jersey, that jobs will not be lost as the majority of seed potatoes will still be hand planted.
