De aardappeltelers in de Amerikaanse staten Idaho krijgen voor de oogst van volgend jaar een contractprijs die 50 procent hoger ligt dan dit jaar.
De contractprijs in de staat Washington stijgt met 33 procent.
De telersverenigingen in de verschillende staten onderhandelen met de industrie over de contractprijzen. Omdat de telers in de VS het aanbod hebben gebundeld kunnen zij hogere contractprijzen afspreken met de industrie. Als de industrie dat niet had gedaan hadden de telers het areaal ingekrompen. De kartelregels in de VS staan het telers toe hun aanbod te bundelen, in tegenstelling tot de Europese mededingingsregels."
Volgens Van der Heide zijn dergelijke afspraken onder telers ook gemaakt in Canada, Australië en Tasmanië. "De NAV probeert ook in Europa te komen tot een bundeling van telers. Alleen gezamenlijk zijn de telers in staat gelijkwaardige gesprekspartners te worden van de industrie. Nu onderhandelen de tienduizenden telers in Noordwest-Europa vaak individueel met de industrie."
In Nederland ligt de opbrengstprijs volgens Van der Keimpe de laatste vijf jaar gemiddeld rond de 11 cent per kilo. "De kostprijs inclusief een marge voor de ondernemer ligt op 15 cent. In Nederland moet de contractprijs ook 40 procent omhoog om de kostprijs te dekken."
