Henan is an important agricultural province in central China, located in the country’s major grain producing belt. Although wheat, maize and other staple crops dominate its agricultural landscape, potatoes are also cultivated as part of China’s central double cropping potato region. Henan’s position between northern and southern production zones gives growers opportunities to use potatoes in rotations and to target different seasonal production windows. FAO classifies Henan within China’s central double-cropping potato region, where potato production is influenced by the province’s seasonal temperature and rainfall patterns.
Potato production in Henan is particularly associated with early and summer crops, with cultivar selection and planting time being important for avoiding excessive heat during tuber development. Research from the Henan Academy of Agricultural Sciences emphasizes the use of early-maturing, high-yielding cultivars for summer production, particularly those capable of forming tubers early and maintaining growth before late-season decline. The province’s potato production therefore includes cultivars selected for food use, starch processing and early market supply rather than relying on a single production type.
Henan’s potato sector is also connected to the province’s agricultural research and breeding activities. The Henan Academy of Agricultural Sciences has evaluated and promoted cultivars according to yield, maturity, disease resistance, quality and end use. Local recommendations have included varieties such as Zhengshu 20, Zhenghong 21, Zhenghong 22 and other cultivars suited to different production and processing requirements. This combination of seasonal production, varietal selection and local research supports potatoes as a complementary crop within Henan’s intensive agricultural system.
Potato cultivation in Henan developed within the broader expansion of potato production across China. The crop became established in different ecological zones because of its relatively flexible planting requirements and its ability to fit into multiple cropping systems. Henan became part of the central double cropping potato region, alongside provinces including Hebei, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Hubei, Hunan, Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui and Jiangxi. This production system helped potatoes occupy seasonal niches alongside the province’s dominant cereal crops.
The development of potato production in Henan was subsequently supported by provincial agricultural research, particularly through cultivar selection and breeding for local growing conditions. Henan researchers have worked on early-maturing, high-yielding and disease-resistant cultivars for summer production, as well as varieties intended for starch processing and fresh consumption. For example, the Henan Academy of Agricultural Sciences identifies Zhenghong 2A-1 as a high-yielding, early-maturing cultivar with resistance to several important diseases, while other locally recommended cultivars have been selected for starch content, processing quality or early market availability.
