Rajasthan is an important potato growing state in north-western India, although potato cultivation is concentrated mainly in the irrigated and relatively cooler parts of the state rather than across the arid western region. The crop is predominantly grown during the rabi season, when winter temperatures allow tuber formation. Areas with suitable soils, irrigation and cooler winter conditions provide better environments for potato production. Well-drained sandy loam to loamy soil is generally preferred, while irrigation is particularly important because much of Rajasthan has limited and uneven rainfall. ICAR guidance indicates that potato performs best when maximum daytime temperatures remain below about 30°C and night temperatures below 20°C during crop development.
Potato production in Rajasthan benefits from improved varieties developed for the northern and warmer plains of India. Varieties such as Kufri Pukhraj, Kufri Surya, Kufri Pushkar and Kufri Chipsona-3 are among the types relevant to northern plains production, with differences in maturity, heat tolerance, yield and processing quality. Kufri Surya is particularly notable for its heat tolerance and suitability for early planting, while Kufri Chipsona-3 has high dry matter and processing quality and has been identified as suitable for areas including the Kota region. More recently, ICAR-CPRI has developed varieties with traits relevant to warmer Indian plains, including Kufri Tejas, a heat-tolerant, medium-maturing variety with reported yields of 37–40 tonnes per hectare under suitable conditions.
Rajasthan's potato sector is linked mainly to fresh consumption, seed requirements and the expanding potato processing industry. The state's location in north-western India places production relatively close to major potato consuming and processing markets in northern and western India. Processing-oriented varieties are becoming increasingly important because traits such as high dry matter, low reducing sugars and good storage quality are required for chips and other processed products. ICAR-CPRI's breeding programme has progressively expanded potato varieties with improved yield, disease resistance, heat tolerance and processing characteristics, supporting adaptation of potato production beyond traditional cooler potato growing areas.
Potato became established in Rajasthan as part of the wider expansion of irrigated vegetable cultivation in India's northern plains. Unlike the traditional potato growing regions of the Indo-Gangetic plains, Rajasthan presented additional challenges because of its dry climate, high temperatures and dependence on irrigation. The development and dissemination of improved varieties by ICAR-CPRI helped make potato cultivation more practical in warmer and semi-arid production environments. The breeding of heat tolerant cultivars such as Kufri Surya, which was developed for early planting and warmer areas, represents an important step in extending potato production into such environments.
Research and varietal development subsequently increased the range of potato types available for Rajasthan and neighbouring regions. Kufri Chipsona-3, released in 2005, was identified for the Indo-Gangetic plains as well as the Kota and Indore regions, combining high yield, high tuber dry matter and suitable chip colour. This reflects the gradual shift of potato production from being primarily a fresh-market crop toward a more diversified system that also supports processing. Continued development of heat tolerant and processing varieties, including newer ICAR-CPRI cultivars, is helping address the production challenges faced by potato growers in warmer parts of India.
