Kerala is not a major potato producing state compared with India’s principal potato growing regions, but the crop has a distinct place in the state’s high range vegetable production. Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is mainly suited to the cooler upland areas, particularly in Idukki district, where elevation and comparatively lower temperatures create conditions suitable for tuber development. The Kerala Agricultural University notes that potato can be cultivated successfully in the high ranges and is grown in the rain-shadow areas of eastern Idukki. Day temperatures of around 20–30°C are considered suitable for growth and tuberization, while temperatures above 30°C can adversely affect tuber formation.
Idukki is the most important potato growing area in Kerala, with production historically concentrated around the highland and rain-shadow areas of the Devikulam region. Government agricultural statistics show that Idukki accounted for most of the state's potato area in several years. In 2017–18, for example, Kerala had 516 hectares under potato, of which 516 hectares were recorded in Idukki in the district-level table; earlier statistics also show substantial cultivation around Devikulam. The high-altitude areas around Kanthalloor, Vattavada and Marayoor are particularly important for cool-climate vegetables. Kanthalloor, at about 5,000 feet above sea level, is officially described as an area where potato is among the vegetables cultivated alongside carrot, cabbage, beans and garlic.
Potato production in Kerala is relatively small and fluctuates considerably from year to year. State statistics recorded 975 hectares and 19,050 tonnes in 2012–13, but the area had fallen to 446 hectares and 6,038 tonnes by 2020–21, with productivity also changing over the period. The crop is nevertheless valuable in Kerala's high-range vegetable systems because it provides farmers with an additional cool-season crop suited to areas where the climate differs markedly from the warmer lowlands. Kerala Agricultural University recommends varieties such as Kufri Jyoti, Kufri Muthu and Kufri Dewa for the state's high ranges and identifies several planting windows for eastern Idukki, including March–April, August–December and January–February.
The development of potato cultivation in Kerala is closely associated with the expansion of agriculture in the state's high ranges rather than with the traditional crop systems of the coastal and lowland areas. Idukki's uplands developed a distinctive agricultural economy influenced by migration, plantation development and vegetable cultivation. Historical accounts of the Devikulam area describe migration from Tamil Nadu and subsequent changes in land use during the British period, when plantation crops such as tea, coffee, cardamom and rubber became important. Within this highland agricultural environment, vegetables adapted to cooler conditions, including potato, became part of local production systems. Research documenting agriculture in the Devikulam region also records potato cultivation among the crops grown by communities in the Marayoor area.
The expansion of improved Indian potato varieties subsequently supported cultivation in southern hill environments. Kufri Jyoti, released in 1968, became one of India's widely adapted varieties, while Kufri Muthu, released in 1971, was specifically developed for the South Indian hills. Kerala Agricultural University later incorporated varieties such as Kufri Jyoti, Kufri Muthu and Kufri Dewa into its recommendations for the state's high ranges. Historical Kerala agricultural records show that Devikulam was already a particularly important potato growing area by the early 2010s, while the state's later statistics demonstrate how the crop's cultivated area has fluctuated. Today, potato remains a specialized high-range vegetable crop in Kerala, with its strongest association with the cooler agricultural landscapes of eastern Idukki.
