Michell’s Farm is a sixth-generation, family-owned and operated farm located in Saanichton, British Columbia, with more than 150 years of farming history on the Saanich Peninsula. The farm has grown from its original 100 acres to more than 400 acres, plus additional leased land, producing over 4,000 tonnes of agricultural products annually.
The farm produces more than 50 varieties of fruits and vegetables, along with hay, grain and pasture-raised beef. Its diverse production includes potatoes, carrots, sweet corn, berries, leafy vegetables, squash, pumpkins and other seasonal crops. Michell’s Farm Market also offers locally produced food and agricultural products directly to the community.
Potatoes have a particularly important place in Michell’s Farm history. The farm originally focused mainly on potato production before the discovery of the golden nematode led to a federal potato-growing ban in Central Saanich during the 1980s. The restriction pushed the Michell family to diversify its production, helping shape the broad agricultural operation it is today, while the sixth generation continues to farm the land.
