The West Bengal government has withdrawn all restrictions on the interstate movement of potatoes, a decision expected to provide major relief to farmers, traders, and cold storage operators across the state. The earlier restrictions, imposed under the previous TMC government, had reportedly affected potato growers by limiting market access and creating price pressures during peak harvest periods.

The latest decision removes barriers on transporting potatoes to other states, enabling farmers to access wider markets and secure potentially better prices for their produce.

Improved Market Access and Supply Chain Efficiency

West Bengal is one of India’s leading potato-producing states and supplies potatoes to several neighbouring regions. Industry stakeholders believe the removal of interstate trade restrictions will improve supply chain efficiency, reduce market distortions, and support smoother movement of produce across state borders.

The decision is particularly significant following a strong potato harvest season, when unrestricted trade becomes crucial to avoid oversupply in local markets and sharp price declines.

Background

Restrictions on potato exports from West Bengal have repeatedly triggered concerns among farmers, traders, and neighbouring states over the years. In 2024, the suspension of potato supplies to Odisha and Jharkhand sparked political tensions and market uncertainty in eastern India. Political Context

Ahead of the Assembly elections, the BJP had promised to remove restrictions on the movement of potatoes and other essential commodities, arguing that freer trade would benefit the farming community and improve market stability.
