Als gevolg van de uitzonderlijk zachte temperaturen dreigen nogal wat aardappeltelers die hun aardappelen proberen te bewaren zonder een professionele bewaarplaats hun oogst te verliezen. Aardappelen die niet in geïsoleerde en klimaatgecontroleerde loodsen bewaard worden, beginnen immers nu al te schieten waardoor ze niet meer verkocht kunnen worden.
Sedert half oktober overheersen in ons land zachte temperaturen. We stevenen momenteel af op de tweede warmste novembermaand ooit. Voor steeds meer aardappeltelers dreigt hierdoor de oogst alsnog in het water te vallen. "Door de warme temperaturen beginnen veel aardappelen nu al te schieten", vertelt landbouwjournalist Luc Busschaert. "Dat is veel te vroeg. Normaal gebeurt dat pas in februari of maart".
Volgens hem speelt ook de langdurige droogte van de voorbije zomer een rol. "Hierdoor moesten de aardappelen al in augustus in plaats van in september uit de grond. Dat zorgt ervoor dat ze nu al beginnen te kiemen", aldus Busschaert. Woordvoerster van Boerenbond, Anne-Marie Vangeenberghe, waarschuwt er wel voor dat er een onderscheid moet gemaakt worden tussen boeren die hun aardappeloogst professioneel opslaan en de rest.
