Greg Donald, manager of the Prince Edward Island Potato Board, estimated Wednesday that between 65 and 75 per cent of the Island’s 2016 potato crop would be in the ground by the end of the day (May 30).

Donald suggested the planting schedule has returned pretty much to normal after last year’s excessively late start.

The earliest that spuds went in the ground this year was April 19. Then a mix of cold and damp weather set in to slow the progress.

Conditions for planting have been so good lately that Donald admits the land could use a good rain just about now.

The Potato Board’s general manager indicated Prince Edward Island’s potato acreage in recent years has been hovering in the 88,000 to 90,000 range. He anticipates this year’s crop will be close to those numbers.
