S-Blade is a high capacity automatic defect removal system developed by PIP Innovations for the french fry industry. Deep learning detects each defect, and S-Blade removes the defect and recovers the remaing ‘good’ fry.
S-Blade’s capacity is 9 metric tons per hour, with cost of ownership estimated at no more than €45K per year. It is complementary to optical sorting, not a replacement. Optical sorters reject defective fries, while S-Blade removes the defect and keeps the good product. Used together, they lift overall yield.
S-Blade detects black spots, green ends, bruises, discoloration, skin defects and rotten parts, all with one system. It is built as a complete line, with de-watering, distribution and spreader shakers ahead of inspection and an outfeed shaker after cutting. Fries are transported through the system by water, which keeps the lanes clean during production.
PIP Innovations is the only supplier applying deep learning to defect removal in french fries production. When a defect is missed or cut incorrectly, PIP improves the model and rolls out controlled, tested updates, so every producer benefits over time. Even defect removal from skin-on fries is possible.
