Uncle Ray's was founded by "Uncle" Ray Jenkins, who started his food company in 1965, selling items from the back seat of his Dodge Dart in Detroit. The company then changed its name to Cabana Foods, increased its production operations, and began producing potato chips and other snacks. In 1983, the firm purchased the old Superior Potato Chip factory on Detroit's west side, increasing its potato chip production capacity. Ray Jenkins then acquired the company back and launched the Uncle Ray's potato chip brand, which hit the market in 1998.
The firm is now known as Uncle Ray's LLC, previously Cabana Foods, and it continues to manufacture branded snack goods in Detroit.
