The European Union’s agreement with Mercosur was ultimately not signed last weekend, as initially expected, after the EU failed to reach the necessary internal consensus due to opposition from countries such as France.

Within the fruit and vegetable sector, Spanish exports to Mercosur countries amount to just USD 31 million, while imports reached USD 161 million up to August this year.

Spanish fruit and vegetable trade imbalance with Mercosur widens

Spanish exports of fresh fruit and vegetables to Mercosur countries — Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay — in 2025, specifically from January to August, totaled USD 31 million, compared with USD 39 million in the same period of the previous year. This represents a year-on-year decline of 20.5%, according to data from the Department of Customs and Special Taxes, processed by FEPEX.

In volume terms, Spanish exports to Mercosur through August 2025 amounted to just 19 million tonnes, a 40% decrease compared with the same period in 2024.

In contrast to the decline in Spanish shipments to Mercosur, imports continue to grow, highlighting the limited opportunities these countries offer to Spain’s export sector. Imports from January to August 2025 reached USD 161 million, an 8% increase compared with the same months of 2024. In volume terms, Spanish imports rose from 107 million tonnes to 121 million tonnes, an increase of 13%.

Looking at the most recent full year, 2024, Spanish exports of fresh fruit and vegetables to Mercosur totaled 63,000 tonnes with a value of USD 80 million, while imports reached 193,000 tonnes valued at USD 248 million.
