Boeren in de Andes houden de genetische variëteit van de aardappel in stand door soms wel honderd verschillende lokale cultivars te verbouwen. Dat stelt promovendus ir. Stef de Haan, die tussen 2003 en 2006 veldonderzoek deed bij acht boerengemeenschappen in de Peruaanse regio Huancavelica.
De Haan bracht de genetische diversiteit van lokale aardappelrassen in kaart aan de hand van morfologische karakteristieken, moleculaire merkers en chromosoom-tellingen. Hij telde 557 morfologisch en 406 genetisch unieke cultivars in het gebied. Die diversiteit in het veld kwam nagenoeg overeen met die van de collectie van het Peruaanse aardappelinstituut CIP, waar De Haan werkt. De CIP-collectie is rond 1975 verzameld. De afgelopen jaren heeft dus geen genetische erosie plaatsgevonden, concludeert De Haan.
