Potato Growers in Pakistan oppose duty free potato import

April 11, 2009
The Farmers Associates Pakistan (FAP) has said potato growers are facing huge losses due to an unfavourable decision of the government allowing duty-free import of potato at a time when the country has produced a bumper crop.

The FAP said that the government had exempted the import of potato from duty, sales tax, withholding tax, etc, though there has never been any shortage of potato in Pakistan. A huge quantity of cheap potato was being imported tax-free, it added.
The FAP and the farmers suggests that instead of duty free import of potato products, companies should be encouraged to put up processing plants and use local potato for processing.
