Een Duits instituut heeft een methode ontwikkeld om in een perceel te bepalen of een aardappelplant besmet is met phytophthora, de aardappelplaag. Volgens het Institut für Photonische Technologien (IPHT) kan de teler de aardappelziekte zo beter bestrijden.
De nieuwe methode maakt het mogelijk om in het perceel te bepalen of een aardappelplant besmet is met phytophthora-sporen, ook als er geen zichtbare verschijnselen van de ziekte zijn. "Tot nu toe kan dat alleen in een gespecialiseerd laboratorium”, zegt onderzoekster Sandra Julich van het IPHT. “Daar worden dure onderzoekstechnieken voor gebruikt."
De onderzoekers willen de methode nog verder verfijnen. "We willen het onderzoeksapparaat zo klein maken dat het in een koffer past. En we willen het systeem verder automatiseren. Ook willen we meer stammen phytophthora kunnen opsporen", aldus Julich. Momenteel kan het systeem vijf verschillende stammen onderscheiden.
