Op een aantal plaatsen op Walcheren en in westelijk Zeeuws-Vlaanderen worden de restanten van de aardappeloogst 2010 nu pas uit de grond gehaald. Het is zo'n zes maanden later dan in een normaal seizoen.
In de kuststrook Sluis, Aardenburg, Oostburg en Eede kon circa 300 hectare niet in de normale periode gerooid worden. De akkers waren door de extreem natte grond onbegaanbaar voor veel rooimachines. Er werd van een rampjaar gesproken.
Bij de aardappels die nu pas gerooid worden, is het zetmeel door de vrieskou omgezet in suikers;de aardappels zijn daardoor ongeschikt voor frietaardappelen. Ze krijgen een bestemming in de 'vlokkenlijn'. Dat betekent dat er puree of pringles van gemaakt kunnen worden.
Het bintje levert op de vrije markt 22 tot 23 cent per kilo op, tegenover een magere 7 cent voor de bevroren aardappels. Dat is net de kostprijs.
