For years the humble spud has been viewed as a simple, even boring, side dish. But that may soon change, with many in the Australian industry attempting to give mash a makeover.

A host of new varieties is hitting the supermarket shelves and the quest to find a more alluring spud is not only extremely competitive, but costly as well.

The DKHV is relaunching the 'Kids an die Knolle' school garden program in 2026, inviting teachers and educators to register and receive 5 kg of free seed potatoes for hands-on learning. Schools can register until 15 February 2026.
