First Cornish potatoes at Tesco
June 11, 2013
Tesco stores in the South West of England will receive the first Cornish potatoes from Branston this week.

The New potatoes are locally heralded as a signal to the start of the Summer and are the UK?s first new potato crop available.

Richard Clark, Commercial Director, Branston said, “We are pleased to welcome in the new season and are looking forward to presenting some exceptional quality that is coming out from Cornwall. The region is of significant importance to both the growers and retailers as it marks the start of the new potato season from which the momentum is built. We are excited about showcasing our Cornish produce to the Tesco consumer nationwide as we move into a national spread a little later in the season."

Cornwall traditionally follows the Jersey Royal season and these are the first new season potatoes available from the UK mainland.

Their early appearance is brought about by the warmer southern climate and high light levels and they offer the perfect demonstration of great British produce.

The potatoes are noted for their soft fluffy skin finish and sweet creamy texture. Tesco Category Manager Andrew Blackett explains, “The Cornish season is of significant importance to our customers in the South West of the country who are keen to see a strong local offering in their local stores. Such is the quality of the product we are looking to spread the offer nationwide later this year to raise awareness of Cornish potatoes throughout the country to other regions.

"Our aim as a business is to offer the best in season to our shoppers and I believe that this offer along with others throughout the year truly enhances that commitment.”
