Seed Potato growers on South Australia's Kangaroo Island have welcomed a boost in yields.

The island is known for having disease-free soil, giving its seed spud growers a competitive edge in the mainland marketplace.

Parndana grower Peter Cooper says he harvested about 850 tonnes this year and says yields were definitely up.

"Fantastic harvest - probably 25 to 30 per cent up on my average yield for the last three or four years," he said.

"We had a much wetter than average winter, so I had plenty of water going into summer.

"Then we had a much wetter than average start to summer, which helped me out with irrigation."

Mr Cooper says he's only been in the potato industry for about five years.

The potato crop was a way of diversifying the family farm, allowing him to come home.
