Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Forestales, Agrícolas y Pecuarias (INIFAP) is Mexico's national agricultural, forestry, and livestock research organization that offers research, improved crop varieties, production methods, technical information, and technology transfer services. INIFAP's potato research focuses on potato breeding, disease tolerance, seed quality, germplasm conservation, crop management, and cultivars for fresh consumption and processing, including the frying industry. Its research focuses on improving productivity, phytosanitary, and environmental conditions in Mexican agriculture.
INIFAP was founded in 1985 via the merger of Mexico's agricultural and livestock research organisations, and it is part of a larger tradition of public agricultural research stretching back to the early twentieth century. The institute conducts research using a network of regional research centers and experimental areas spread across Mexico. It works on agricultural, livestock, and forestry production systems, with research projects including crop enhancement, biotechnology, plant health, soil and water management, climate-related production difficulties, and technology transfer. INIFAP has introduced improved varieties across a wide range of crops and offers growers production technology and technical training.
INIFAP runs a National Potato Research Program and an in-vitro germplasm bank of 480 potato genotypes, including native, improved clones, and cultivars. Potato cultivars with tolerance or resistance to diseases such as late blight are being developed, as are technology for minimising pesticide usage and enhancing output in a variety of environments. The institution also focuses on potato materials that meet processing industry requirements, such as frying and chip quality.
INIFAP has developed and evaluated several potato varieties, including Nevada, Cristal, and Ameyali, as well as experimental clones 020347 and 020336. Genotypes 98-18-24 and 07-10-35 were also found for production locations in Coahuila and Nuevo León, and they were tested for late blight tolerance and other regional production restrictions.
