Ondanks dat de groei van de aardappelen dit jaar achter loopt ten opzichte van andere jaren. Dat stelt het marktbureau Agra Europe in een rapport over de aardappelmarkt. Volgens het marktbureau heeft de verwerkende industrie in de vijf belangrijkste aardappelproducerende landen in Noordwest-Europa komend seizoen ongeveer 27,5 miljoen ton aardappelen nodig, inclusief pootaardappelen. "Dat is net zo veel als in 2008 aan aardappelen is geproduceerd. Waarschijnlijk is er volgend seizoen zelfs meer dan 28 miljoen ton nodig, aangezien de export van aardappelproducten toeneemt."
Vorig jaar is 29,2 miljoen ton poot- en consumptieaardappelen geoogst in Nederland, België, Duitsland, Frankrijk en het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Dit jaar is het gewas minder goed ontwikkeld, schrijft Agra Europe. "Het is koud geweest. En er is minder regen gevallen waardoor de groei traag op gang kwam."
Maar het areaal groeit, stelt het bureau. "Waarschijnlijk groeit het areaal met 0,7 procent naar 661.000 hectare. Bovendien schakelen steeds meer akkerbouwers over van tafelaardappelen op aardappelen voor de verwerkende industrie."
