Aardappeltelers uit het Verenigd Koninkrijk zeggen dat de veranderende eetgewoonten hun tol eisen op hun sector. Doordat consumenten zich afkeren van de oorspronkelijke Britse hoofdproducten en in plaats daarvan kiezen voor rijst en pasta, stapelen de aardappelvoorraden zich op en kelderen de prijzen.
De aardappel was ooit het meest lucratieve gewas voor telers uit Noord-Ierland, maar nu ligt dat anders. Veel telers willen de gok niet meer wagen op het planten van aardappelen, het product waarvan de prijzen zijn gedaald tot 30% en waarvan de kosten om te planten per acre op £2.000 liggen.

European seed potato multiplication area fell 1.6% to 105,155 hectares in 2026, according to ESPG data. Germany recorded slight growth, while the other major producing countries and several leading varieties saw declines.
