Sweet potatoes are rapidly gaining popularity in Ukraine

In Ukraine, demand for niche vegetable crops is growing noticeably, most notably for sweet potatoes and asparagus. These observations were shared in a market review of the magazine "Gardening in Ukrainian" by Ksenia Guseva, an expert on the fruit and vegetable market at APK-Inform IA.

Ksenia Guseva:

"While sweet potatoes used to be sold only in premium supermarkets – like Le Silpo or Delmar – now they can be found even in regular retail chains, in particular Varus. The price has become quite affordable."

According to the expert, the production of salads and greens is also growing: on the shelves there are many fresh mixes, ready-made packaged salads, green onions, parsley, and dill.

Ksenia Guseva:

"I won't say that prices are high, but the choice is much wider now than a few years ago. Conditions for growing greens are now favorable, so production is gradually increasing."

Greens and sweet potatoes remain niche crops that are grown mainly under specific contracts - for supermarkets or restaurants, the expert emphasizes.

Ksenia Guseva:

"This is not a mass product: you need to know exactly who you are selling to before you plant it. If ten farms nearby grow onions and only one grows potatoes, then the potatoes will be more expensive."
