Vietnam Approves Export of Nearly 28,000 Potato Seeds to India for Research

The Lam Dong Department of Agriculture and Environment (Vietnam) has approved the export of 27,952 potato seeds (Solanum tuberosum) to India for scientific research, marking another step in international agricultural collaboration and potato breeding innovation.

Under the official plant variety export permit, the Potato, Vegetable and Flower Research Center, part of the Institute of Agricultural Science for Southern Viet Nam, has been authorized to export potato seeds representing 23 different breeding lines. The shipment contains between 60 and 3,936 seeds for each breeding line and will be transported through Tan Son Nhat International Airport.

The permit is valid only for the approved shipment and remains effective for 12 months from the date of issuance.

Supporting Potato Breeding Through International Research

According to the Viet Nam Organic Agriculture Magazine, the entire shipment is intended exclusively for research purposes. The exported breeding lines will be evaluated under Indian growing conditions, helping researchers assess their adaptability across different environments.

The exchange of plant genetic materials plays a vital role in modern potato breeding by enabling scientists to collect valuable data on crop performance in diverse ecological conditions. Such research supports the development of improved potato varieties with higher yields, enhanced quality, and greater resistance to climate change, pests, and diseases, while strengthening international scientific cooperation.

Strict Regulations Govern the Export

The export permit states that the potato breeding lines are exempt from state quality inspection. However, the plant materials may only be used for approved research activities and must not negatively affect the environment, including soil, water resources, biodiversity, or human health if handled improperly.

The Potato, Vegetable and Flower Research Center bears full legal responsibility for the management and use of the exported plant materials. The institution must comply with the Law on Plant Protection and Quarantine and all other relevant Vietnamese regulations throughout the export process.

After the shipment is completed, the Center is required to submit a report on the export and the use of the plant materials to the Lam Dong Department of Agriculture and Environment through the provincial Sub-Department of Plant Production and Protection, in accordance with current regulations.

Potatoes remain one of the world's most economically important food crops. In Viet Nam, particularly in Lam Dong Province, continued investment in potato research, variety development, and international germplasm exchange is considered essential for improving production efficiency and supporting a modern, sustainable potato industry capable of meeting growing domestic and international market demands.
