Recent maakte het NIS (Nationaal Instituut voor de Statistiek) de voorlopige areaalcijfers bekend voor 2009. Het NIS baseert zijn gegevens voor deze landbouwtelling op 60% van de bedrijven.
Uit deze cijfers blijkt dat het totale areaal aardappelen dit jaar 16% groter zou zijn dan in 2008. Vooral in Wallonië, waar tot op heden officiële cijfers ontbraken, is de uitbreiding zeer groot. Het consumptieareaal groeit met 23% tot ruim 30.000 ha. In Vlaanderen bedraagt de stijging 12%, waardoor het totaal areaal uitkomt op 42.585 ha (inclusief pootgoed). Dit cijfer sluit zeer goed aan bij de cijfers die begin juni bekend gemaakt werden op basis van de verzamelaanvragen. Het totale areaal consumptieaardappelen in België wordt door het NIS geschat op 71.415 ha. Dit is 10.000 ha meer dan in 2008.
