Het Wâldgieltsje is terug. Een oud aardappelras is nu een Friese culinaire bijzonderheid. Bijna was het eind nabij, maar aardappelteler Jaap Wilman heeft veel moeite gedaan om dat te voorkomen. Met succes.
Het ras was jaren geleden op sterven na dood. De aardappel ging kapot aan virusziekten, verduidelijkt Wilman. Het was een uitvloeisel van het feit dat het ras eigenlijk nooit een grootschalige, professionele teelt heeft gekend. Hij is de enige in Friesland die op grotere schaal dit ras teelt.
Zo'n zes jaar lang werkte Wilman aan het terughalen van dit bijzondere aardappelras. De belangstelling voor deze aardappel groeit bijkans sneller. Zeker nu het Wâldgieltsje vorig jaar het predikaat van gecertificeerd streekproduct kreeg toegekend.
