UGent, ILVO, VIB en HoGent hebben van de federale ministers Paul Magnette en Laurette Onkelinx (PS) toelating gekregen om een tweejarige veldproef uit te voeren met genetisch gemodificeerde aardappelen die bestand zijn tegen de aardappelplaag, veroorzaakt door phytophthora infestans. De ziekte brengt elk jaar om en bij de 55 miljoen euro schade toe aan de aardappelteelt in België.
Na een genuanceerd positief advies van de Bioveiligheidsraad zetten de federale ministers van Leefmilieu en Volksgezondheid het licht op groen voor een veldproef met ggo-aardappelen die resistent zijn tegen de aardappelplaag.
De onderzoekers willen met de veldproef bijdragen tot een meer duurzame aardappelteelt in België. De bestrijding van phytophthora infestans vergt immers de inzet van gewasbeschermingsmiddelen op grote schaal, terwijl opbrengst- en bewaarverliezen niet uit te sluiten zijn zodat de globale kost voor de aardappelsector in de miljoenen euro's oploopt.
