Kenya has one of the most developed potato sectors in East Africa, with potato (Solanum tuberosum) serving as both an important food crop and a major source of income for smallholder farmers. Production is concentrated mainly in the cool, high-altitude areas, generally between about 1,500 and 3,000 m above sea level. The principal potato-growing zones include the slopes of Mount Kenya, the Aberdare Range, the Mau highlands, the Rift Valley, Mount Elgon and the Taita Hills. Major producing counties include Nyandarua, Nakuru, Meru, Kiambu, Nyeri, Bomet, Narok, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, Bungoma, Uasin Gishu and West Pokot.
Kenyan potato production is predominantly carried out by smallholder farmers, although commercial and larger-scale producers are increasingly involved. Nyandarua is particularly important in the Central Highlands, while Meru is a major production centre around Mount Kenya and Nakuru, Bomet and Narok contribute substantially from the Rift Valley and Mau highlands. Other important areas include the Mount Elgon and North Rift zones. Potatoes benefit from Kenya's cool highland climate and relatively short production cycle, allowing farmers in suitable areas to produce more than one crop during favourable rainfall periods. Production has also expanded beyond traditional highland areas into emerging regions such as Kirinyaga, Nandi, Baringo, Kisii, Nyamira and parts of the warmer lowlands through irrigation and the introduction of improved, heat-tolerant varieties.
The Kenyan potato industry is increasingly linked to urban food demand, restaurants, fast-food outlets and potato-processing businesses, particularly for chips and crisps. However, productivity remains constrained by limited access to certified seed, diseases such as bacterial wilt and late blight, declining soil fertility, pests, and inconsistent agronomic practices. Kenya has consequently placed strong emphasis on improved varieties, quality seed production, disease management and climate-resilient potato breeding. Research and variety development involve organizations such as the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), the International Potato Center (CIP), universities and private-sector seed companies. More than 50 potato varieties have been released or introduced through these collaborative efforts, with breeding increasingly focused on yield, disease resistance, processing quality and adaptation to changing climatic conditions.
Potatoes are believed to have reached Kenya and other parts of East Africa through British settlers and soldiers during the late 19th century, with historical sources generally placing their introduction in the 1880s. Early cultivation was concentrated around the central highlands, particularly present-day Kiambu, Murang'a and Nyeri. Kenyan farmers gradually adopted the crop, and indigenous cultivation became established during the 1920s. Kerr's Pink, a variety originating from the United Kingdom, was among the principal varieties grown during the early period. By the early 1920s, potato cultivation had expanded sufficiently to support local markets, and Kenya also briefly participated in potato exports to India.
Formal potato research and breeding developed during the colonial period and expanded considerably after independence. Research on potato varieties and seed production was undertaken at the National Agricultural Laboratories at Kabete and later at the Plant Breeding Station at Njoro. During the Second World War, potato production became strategically important for supplying food to British military forces, and dehydration facilities were established in areas including Kerugoya and Karatina. Disease problems, particularly bacterial wilt and virus infections, subsequently affected production in some traditional areas and encouraged the introduction and evaluation of new varieties. From the 1940s onward, breeding programs increasingly emphasized late-blight resistance and adaptation to Kenyan highlands. Later collaboration between KARI/KALRO, CIP and other institutions led to the development and release of locally adapted varieties, helping transform potato from a predominantly European-introduced crop into one of Kenya's major staple and commercial crops.
