The annual “Potato Specialist” training program, organized by the German Potato Trade Association (DKHV), began last week with its first module held in Hermannsburg, located in the Lüneburg Heath.

Over the course of three days, a total of 46 participants from across Germany — ranging from newcomers to seasoned professionals — came together to deepen their knowledge about potatoes and gain hands-on, practical training. The participants were divided into two smaller groups to enable more intensive exchange and targeted practical exercises.

The first day was fully dedicated to theory. Following a professional introduction by DKHV representative Jutta Becker-Ritterspach on the origins, botany, and cultivation conditions of potatoes in Germany, experienced instructors delivered in-depth lectures on modern breeding techniques, growth conditions, and the requirements for quality and crop rotation. The topic of plant protection was also thoroughly covered, with a special focus on pests, diseases, and proper field inspection in line with the Berlin Agreements.

A relaxed social evening afterward provided space for informal conversations and exchange on the industry's challenges and outlook — a valuable component of the training, as many participants noted.

On the second day, the seminar shifted toward practical applications at the teaching and demonstration garden of the Lower Saxony Chamber of Agriculture. There, the theory came to life: participants observed the differences between healthy and affected crops, learned to identify typical damage patterns, and were given vivid explanations of biological development phases, such as that of the Colorado potato beetle. This strong focus on practical learning generated enthusiasm and lasting insights among the participants.

The response to the first module was overwhelmingly positive. Participants especially praised the effective combination of technical knowledge and hands-on learning, as well as the dedication of the instructors.

Lecturer Nikolaus Schackmann:

"It’s important to me to share my enthusiasm for potatoes — and we succeeded."

The participants were equally enthusiastic. One participant emphasized, “This comprehensive approach makes this informative training unique in the industry.”

The program will continue in the fall with the second module, which will take place in southern Germany. Information about the qualification and registration for the upcoming year is available on the DKHV website.
