Na de internationale jaren voor de rijst (2004) en voor de bergen (2002) kan een jaar voor de aardappel natuurlijk niet achterblijven. Vorige week opende de Verenigde Naties het jaar met als belangrijkste doel om overheden subsidie te laten verstrekken aan het benodigde wetenschappelijke onderzoek naar een duurzame gezondheid van de aardappel. Daarnaast krijgt de aardappel veel aandacht op allerlei conferenties: van de 7e Afrikaanse aardappelenconferentie in Alexandrië (Egypte) eind deze maand, de wereldwijde aardappelconferentie in New Delhi (India) in december 2008 tot de conferentie Europatat in Bern (Zwitserland) in mei 2008.
