Spuds' bad press is half baked, claims Irish campaign

February 19, 2008

A campaign to raise awareness about the humble spud couldn't have come at a better time for Ireland's beleaguered potato growers.

A total of €300,000 has been invested in a national campaign by the Department of Agriculture, Bord Bia, Agri Award, Teagasc, the IFA and Safefood, which aims to restore the spud to its former glory.

A recent survey revealed that only 27pc of respondents believed the potato to be healthier than rice or pasta. When it came to calorie content, 41pc said potatoes had more calories than rice or pasta, when in fact potatoes have the least calories and the lowest level of fat.
