The UK’s leading potato supplier Greenvale AP is working with Tesco to help British consumers serve up the best roast potatoes ever – and like all good things at Christmas they come in a box!
The Mayan Gold potato box is available exclusively at Tesco from 5 December. But with only limited supplies they’re like gold dust and expected to run out by Christmas Eve. The stylish presentation box containing 2kg of Mayan Gold potatoes is sold as part of the Tesco Finest range and a real gift to every domestic goddess or chef slaving over a hot stove this Christmas.
These gourmet potatoes are reputed to be the best ever variety for roasting thanks to their smooth texture, delicious buttery taste, yellow golden colour and thin skin that crisps to perfection when roasted. Mayan Gold has been specially bred by Greenvale AP from a species grown in the wilds of Peru, called Phureja. Said to be almost identical to the variety Raleigh brought back with him for Queen Elizabeth I over 400 years ago they require half the cooking time of modern potatoes so save valuable time in the kitchen and in fact are better steamed than boiled which actively helps retain the rich flavours and nutrients. For perfect roast results, consumers are advised to follow closely the instructions on the box.
Paul Coleman, Technical Director for Greenvale AP, said: “These specialist potatoes are grown for us around the country by our growers and are notoriously difficult to cultivate. However they really are worth the effort. The tuber is long and oval with an unrivalled delicious nutty flavour. I would say that Mayan Gold is the perfect roasting potato.”
