Naturally Homegrown Foods Ltd., Canada’s premium, all natural snack food company proudly announced today that it has initiated an aggressive waste reduction and sustainability initiative with its manufacturing operation. The company has partnered with Fraser Valley Biogas, and FortisBC to recycle organic waste from the company’s food processing plant into a renewable natural gas.

As part of Naturally Homegrown Foods’ commitment to reduce and eliminate waste for its manufacturing operation the company has partnered with Fraser Valley Biogas to convert organic waste from the plant, into biogas, a carbon neutral energy source produced through a process called “Anaerobic Digestion”. The biogas is then purified to become renewable natural gas which can be used in the same was as conventional natural gas.

The renewable natural gas displaces conventional natural gas which is used to support the energy needs of the plant operation, including powering cooking equipment to produce Hardbite brand potato chips.

In addition, a high-quality fertilizer is produced as a byproduct which in turn is used to support healthy growth of local potatoes that are used to produce Hardbite Potato Chips. Fortis BC provides the link between Fraser Valley Biogas and Naturally Homegrown Foods through its existing natural gas system and its Renewable Natural Gas program.

According to Pete Schouten, owner of Naturally Homegrown Foods, Heppell Potato Corp and Fraser Valley Biogas the fit is natural, “We’ve been growing potatoes in the Fraser Valley since 1920, and operate BC’s only potato chip manufacturing plant. When we learned about the opportunity to become involved with and operate Fraser Valley Biogas, we felt that it was such a unique fit with our vertically integrated operations. We are able to capture biogas from our waste and close the loop in a sustainable way”.

"As an organization, we have sought ways in which to reduce our footprint on the environment. Through this vertical integration, we’ve found an effective way to reduce plant waste that in turn generates environmentally responsible inputs that we can use to sustainably produce our Hardbite line of chips, said Kirk Homenick, President of Naturally Homegrown Foods.
