Contract to build International Potato Centre in Agra for National Horticulture Board awarded

In a major addition to its agri-infrastructure portfolio, NBCC India Ltd has received a project valued at INR 42.37 crore (USD 5.08 million) from the National Horticulture Board for the development of the proposed International Potato Centre in Agra.

Project overview

The assignment includes comprehensive planning, architectural design, engineering, and execution of the new facility, along with ancillary works identified by NHB. The centre is planned as a world-class hub to support advanced potato research, strengthen value chains, and enhance horticulture development in India.

Strategic role of the Agra centre

Officials indicated that the centre will focus on capacity building, research collaborations, germplasm conservation, processing innovation, and farmer training. Agra has been chosen due to its position in western Uttar Pradesh, one of Indias most productive potato-growing regions.

NBCCs responsibility and expertise

NBCC has been appointed as the project management consultant, underscoring government confidence in the PSU's track record of delivering greenfield institutional projects. The company already manages major programmes in housing, agriculture, smart cities, healthcare, and educational infrastructure.

Strengthening the horticulture ecosystem

Industry observers noted that cooperation between NHB and NBCC supports national priorities related to sustainable agriculture, post-harvest efficiency, and crop diversification. The upcoming International Potato Centre is expected to adopt global best practices and collaborate with international organisations working in tuber and root crop development.

NBCC said the new assignment strengthens its position in specialised infrastructure linked to rural development and food security.
