The annual SAC Association of Potato Producers (SACAPP) conference is set to return for its 27th year in 2026, bringing growers and industry experts together in Dundee on Thursday February 5.

Organised by SAC Consulting, part of SRUC, the event offers producers the chance to network and hear the latest developments from across the sector. This year’s theme, “Driving potato production success with data and innovation,” reflects the conference’s focus on technology, sustainability and forward-thinking solutions.

Dr Kerry Leslie, Potato Consultant at SAC Consulting:

"Innovation and improvement are vital to ensure the industry can adapt and successfully overcome the challenges that it faces. This year’s conference programme has insightful speakers and learning opportunities that will help safeguard the future of the sector."

Global knowledge exchange and cutting-edge ideas

Among the early speakers are Ren Okamura and Hiroto Sugiura from Japanese snack manufacturer Calbee Potato. After spending time shadowing SAC Consulting’s potato team earlier this year, they will discuss their operations in Japan and share insights gained during their visit to Scotland.

Water management will also feature prominently, with experts outlining findings from the Centre of Expertise for Waters (CREW) project on water scarcity. Senior Potato Consultant Gavin Prentice will present work on water resilience and irrigation best practice for Scottish growers.

Production challenges in remote locations will be explored by James Thorburn of Farewell Farms in Orkney, the UK’s most northerly commercial potato producer. Meanwhile, Jacob Smith of sustainable garment company Fibe will showcase how potato harvest waste is being repurposed into clothing—an innovation pushing the boundaries of agri-fashion.

The conference will conclude with a keynote address by Dr David Kenyon, who became head of Science and Advice for Scottish Agriculture (SASA) and Scotland’s chief plant health officer earlier this year.

Dr Kerry Leslie:

"It promises to be a fantastic event, and I am sure it will provide great value and insight to attendees."

The event is free to SACAPP members, but tickets are also available to purchase for non-SACAPP growers and trade.
