Prince Edward Island Potato Industry would be Greatly Impacted by Trump Tariffs

The Prince Edward Island Potato Board is closely monitoring the evolving situation regarding the 25% tariff imposed on Canada by U.S. President Donald Trump, which will undoubtedly have an impact on potato exports from Prince Edward Island.
The PEI Potato Board is working closely with their producers, dealers, and exporters to evaluate the effects of the tariffs on their businesses and to address their concerns. They are also actively collaborating with Provincial and Federal Government representatives, as well as national potato industry organizations, to advocate for the industry and seek solutions.
Over 40% of fresh PEI potatoes are normally shipped to the United States, and the majority of French fries made with PEI potatoes are also destined for the US. About 50% of the Island’s total crop grown ends up in US markets. These unfair and punitive tariffs will have a negative impact on Prince Edward Island potato farms and farm businesses and will raise the cost of food for their American neighbours. Prince Edward Island has been supplying the US with high quality potatoes for generations; unfortunately, these completely unnecessary trade actions brought by President Trump endangers that long-standing relationship.
The potato industry contributes USD 1.35 billion to Prince Edward Island’s economy, supporting 175 family farms and their workers, along with a diverse network of related businesses, including potato packers, processors, equipment manufacturers, dealers, and agricultural suppliers. A prolonged trade dispute threatens to harm this vital industry, which supplies nutritious food to both Canadians and Americans, while also increasing food costs for consumers in the United States.
Prince Edward Island potato growers urge Canadians to choose locally grown potatoes, particularly those from PEI, when making food purchases. PEI potato farms supply fresh potatoes to grocery stores and restaurants across the country, packaged in distinctive PEI-branded bags. In addition to fresh produce, PEI potatoes are used to make French fries, frozen products, and potato chips in Atlantic Canada. Supporting PEI potatoes is a delicious way to enjoy high-quality food while helping Canadian farm families and businesses thrive.
