United Kingdom confirms eradication of Colorado potato beetle after two years of surveillance

The UK has officially eradicated the Colorado Beetle following two years of intensive surveillance and biosecurity activity. The pest was detected in Kent in July 2023, with one further finding later that year. Since then, no additional beetles have been identified, allowing Defra and the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) to confirm eradication status. 

The Colorado potato beetle can rapidly strip foliage from potato crops and also affects tomatoes, aubergines and peppers, posing a significant economic risk if left unchecked. Its eradication reflects close cooperation between growers, government agencies, gardeners and allotment holders.

Growers have been reminded that the beetle is orange-yellow with ten black stripes and does not pose a risk to human health. Anyone who suspects they have found a Colorado Potato Beetle should capture it securely and report it immediately to the relevant plant health authority.
