D-Blade is an intelligent robotic cutting system developed by PIP Innovations for cutting and portioning potatoes, vegetables and fruit. Delta robots with patented multipurpose blades position every cut exactly where it is needed, using vision technology to identify size and position. With up to 4 cuts per second per robot, D-Blade combines high capacity with precise, clean and straight cuts.
The system is multifunctional: different applications run on one system, available with 2 robots or 6. The capacity of the system depends on the application but reaches 3 to 5 cuts per second per robot.
It handles produce of any size or shape, with few moving parts and an open, accessible design that keeps maintenance low. D-Blade is used worldwide across the potato, carrot and strawberry industries and the wider fruit and vegetable sector.
Applications
- Calyx removal, strawberries: recognises the calyx position by colour and shape and handles all varieties regardless of shape, colour, softness and quality, with cutting efficiency between 80 and 95 percent
- De-capping of hot peppers: using blades, D-Blade will remove the green stems from any kind of hot pepper.
- Halving or quartering: using a patented multi-purpose knife, we can either halve or quarter a potato depending on the size.
- Hasselback potatoes: pick up the potato and slide it across our hasselback cutting block to create this special potato product
- Dynamic portioning potatoes: cut once or twice depending on size
- Defect removal: remove defects from potato slices or fries
- Topping and tailing carrots: remove top and tail
- Static portioning carrots: topping and portioning with one stroke
- Dynamic portioning carrots: optimal part size per carrot
- Baby carrot production: perfectly sized baby carrots at high capacity

The capacity of D-Blade is calculated in cuts per second per robot
Cutting speed is determined by the distance the arms need to move from cut to cut. The higher or bigger the product, the more time it takes. For pick and place applications, i.e. Hasselback, the speed is approximately 1 Hasselback per second. Please see the estimated cutting speed for different applications, assuming proper belt load.
