The Global Potato Summit 2026 has officially announced its dates, positioning India as the focal point for the international potato industry this December. Scheduled for December 16-17, 2026, at the Mahatma Mandir Convention & Exhibition Centre in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, this premier gathering promises to unite stakeholders from across the global potato value chain in one of India’s most progressive agricultural hubs.

Global Potato Summit 2026: A Strategic Platform for Industry Collaboration

The Global Potato Summit 2026 represents more than just an industry conference—it is designed as a comprehensive platform bringing together farmers, processors, exporters, technology providers, policymakers, and global buyers in an integrated ecosystem.

The two-day event will feature:

  • International exhibition showcasing farming equipment and processing technologies
  • High-level conference sessions led by global experts
  • Networking opportunities with industry stakeholders
  • Farm and factory visits for practical learning
  • Industry awards recognizing excellence across the value chain

These elements are strategically designed to provide actionable insights and strategic direction for industry stakeholders while facilitating business connections that extend beyond the event itself.

India’s Rising Global Prominence in Potato Sector

India’s selection as the host nation reflects its expanding role in the global potato industry. India’s potato production in 2024-25 reached 58.108 million tonnes, according to the Third Advance Estimates for Horticulture Crops released by the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare. This marks a 1.85% increase from the 2023-24 production of 57.053 million tonnes, strengthening India’s position as the world’s second-largest potato producer after China.

The overall horticulture production in India for 2024-25 was estimated at 369.05 million tonnes, up from 354.74 million tonnes in 2023-24, representing a 4% year-on-year increase. Potatoes contributed significantly to the vegetable sector, which recorded production of 215.68 million tonnes, showing a 4.09% increase from 207.21 million tonnes in 2023-24.

India’s Export Success Story

Indian fresh potato exports in calendar year 2024 reached 513,537 tonnes, with a record value of INR 9.859 billion (USD 110 million), which was 16.4% more than in 2023. The average export price increased by 17.1% to INR 19,200 per tonne (USD 221). This demonstrates that despite a marginal 0.6% decrease in export volume, the value proposition of Indian potatoes in international markets strengthened significantly.

Nepal remained a major market, accounting for 45% of annual exports at INR 12,865 per tonne. Bangladesh emerged as another significant market with sales reaching 83,786 tonnes—24.3% higher than in 2023—at an average price of INR 16,659 per tonne. India has successfully built trade with more distant markets paying considerably higher prices, including Oman (INR 1.430 billion annual sales at INR 26,706 per tonne), Indonesia (31.2% value increase), and UAE (58.4% value increase).

Processed Potato Export Boom

Indian processed potato exports have witnessed remarkable growth. Dehydrated potato granules and pellets exports surged from USD 11.4 million in 2021-22 to USD 63.3 million in 2024-25—a phenomenal 450% increase, making processed potato products India’s fastest-growing processed food export category. The top five export destinations—Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, and Thailand—account for nearly 80% of India’s total processed potato exports. Potato flour exports demonstrated a staggering 1,100% increase during this period.

Why Gandhinagar, Gujarat Hosts Global Potato Summit 2026

Gujarat’s selection as the summit venue is strategically significant. The state has emerged as India’s leading producer of processed potatoes, surpassing traditional leaders like Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. Gujarat’s Mehsana and Banaskantha districts now host modern dehydration plants supported by contract farming and cold storage networks.

Gujarat’s potato economy is structurally aligned for industrial processing, with production systems delivering processing-grade potatoes with 18-21% dry matter content, ideal for French fries. The state has achieved yield potentials reaching 44 tonnes per hectare with 20-30% reduction in fertilizer costs through strategic manure management.

The venue itself, Mahatma Mandir Convention & Exhibition Centre in Gandhinagar, is one of India’s largest convention facilities, capable of accommodating large-scale international events with modern amenities. Gujarat’s additional advantages include a strong and progressive farming ecosystem, rapidly expanding potato processing infrastructure with cold-chain facilities, investor-friendly policies, and excellent connectivity to ports, markets, and industrial clusters.

Conference Themes and Knowledge Exchange

The Global Potato Summit 2026 conference programme will address critical themes shaping the potato industry’s future, including global potato market trends and trade dynamics, climate-smart and sustainable farming practices, digital agriculture and technological innovation, food safety and quality standards, value addition strategies, and investment opportunities with supporting policy frameworks.

Global Competitiveness and Standards Compliance

Gujarat’s manure-integrated production systems are strongly aligned with Global Good Agricultural Practices (Global G.A.P.) requirements, including 60-day pre-harvest interval for raw manure application, unrestricted use of properly composted manure, complete traceability through manure application records, and reduced synthetic fertilizer dependency. This makes Gujarat’s potatoes suitable for international markets and export-oriented processors requiring certified, residue-safe, sustainably produced raw material. The processing advantages include 15-20% reduction in hollow heart and internal defects, improved frying efficiency with lower oil absorption, and enhanced soil resilience under heat stress and irrigation variability.

Conclusion

The Global Potato Summit 2026 represents a transformative opportunity for India’s potato industry to showcase its capabilities on the world stage. With Gujarat’s strategic advantages in processed potato production and India’s position as the world’s second-largest producer, this December gathering promises to catalyze innovation, strengthen international partnerships, and chart the future course of the global potato value chain.
