The Belgian associations BELFertil (manufacturers of fertilizers) and Belgapom (Potato industry) collaborate to offer growers, crop supervisors, and advisors a new website dedicated to sustainable fertilization practices for potatoes. The initiative aims to provide valuable information and practical tips to optimize fertilization efficiency.

Belgium's significant potato cultivation, spanning approximately 100,000 hectares, forms a vital part of the country's agricultural landscape. This thriving sector sustains thousands of jobs, contributing significantly to the economy.

Despite the importance of potatoes, the crop's shallow roots make nutrient absorption less efficient. However, farmers can enhance efficiency through proper preparation, suitable fertilization strategies, and effective crop management, leading to sustainable and optimal nutrient utilization.

By pooling resources, BELFertil and Belgapom present a comprehensive resource on sustainable fertilization practices through a new website. Expert guidance from Professor Geert Haesaert of Ghent University ensures the scientific integrity of the content.

The primary goal is to promote best practices in fertilization to minimize nitrogen losses and enhance nitrogen use efficiency, aiming for a 70% increase by 2030. This ambitious target is achievable with the right guidance and strategies.

The website serves not only growers but also supervisors, agronomists, fertilizer advisors, and governmental bodies, providing valuable insights into the challenges and solutions associated with potato cultivation.

Through collaborative efforts, the initiative seeks to promote precise fertilizer use, improve potato quality, reduce production costs, and minimize environmental impact, resulting in a win-win situation for all stakeholders.
